Poverty and Poverty Reduction
The fight against worldwide poverty is the main concern of World Vision. Alleviating human need is done on a short-term basis through humanitarian relief at times of natural or other disasters when human beings must be rescued from peril or are at risk of being victimized. But alleviation of poverty is mainly done through long-term development programmes funded through child sponsorships and aimed at improving the life conditions of poor communities. It is also done indirectly through creating awareness and by lobbying for a change of poverty-prolonging structures and conditions.
Poverty and poverty reduction are important topics of our development education by which we seek to inform people about the deeper causes of poverty and about how to contribute to fighting poverty. To inform the public about poverty, its causes and effects, the WVInst has founded the “Institut für Armutsbekämpfung” which runs the website “Armut.de”.
